Unknown Wedding Ceremonies celebrated in North India

We all know that there are many ceremonies in Indian weddings but do we know there are many different rituals and ceremonies in North India, well I guess many of us won’t know these rituals are only celebrated in the North, we’ll talk about those ceremonies in today’s article which are very unknown to other parts of India.

Roka ceremony-

Roka ceremony is celebrated mostly in Punjabi religion, Roka is a ceremony where groom side and bride side meet each other, it is a kind of ceremony in which bride and groom give each other vows that they the bride is booked for marriage for the groom for a future wedding. both the parents of the groom and bride meet each other, they exchange sweets, jewelry, money, and the bride’s parents also promise or give their consent that their daughter will marry the groom in the future. As it is a pre-wedding ceremony, it is the first ceremony of marriage, weddings can’t happen without this ritual in Punjabis. Only the close relatives are invited from both sides to this ceremony as this is a little private ceremony so only 50guests are approximately invited.

GHOROLI Ceremony-

GHROLI is a small ceremony hugely celebrated in north India in which the bride’s sister take earthen pots on her head and walk to the temple they walk dancing and singing with all the other close relatives or friends till they reach a temple or any holy place, whichever is nearby they have to collect water from the temple’s tap, as it is believed that temples water is holy water, in the earthen pot and then return with the water-filled earthen pot on the head and also dance, then the bride or groom both sides have to follow this ritual has to bath with that water as temple water is believed to be auspicious and pure.

Jaggo CEREMONY-

It is a ritual of a Sikh wedding, Jagoo is a ceremony held the night before the wedding day. After completing all the day chores relatives and the neighborhood gather in the home where the wedding will be. The eldest female member or the bride would be carrying a pot and a stand with lamps over it on her head. All other friends and relatives follow her. They start singing Punjabi folk songs accompanied by giddha and bhangra and meep moving to the streets and going to a few homes. Again they dance over there eat sweets or some refreshment. Then come back home in the same manner. The pot is kept shifting to the heads of all members after every few minutes so that everyone could get a chance to carry it.

Sehrabandi CEREMONY-

sehrabandi is a ritual just before the departure of baarat, it is only done to groom and not to the bride it is a very small ritual but very important it is very common in several parts of north India, in sehrabandi a silver sehra is tied on the head of the groom a sehra is a silver band whereas bandi means tieing, the sehra has to be tied by the sisters of groom just after departing for the Barat, over the sehra flowers are also decorated to make it more beautiful, it is believed to be very auspicious as god pictures are engraved on the sehra.

GAANA Ceremony-

In the gaana ceremony local songs are sung which is also called ghodiya, it is a pre-wedding ritual in north Indian weddings it is very popular without doing this ritual a wedding is not said to be complete, For the bride side the ritual is different and for the groom it is different. for the bride the priest come to pray for the bride, then they tie the gaana which is a holy thread, in which supari, ring, seashell, green pearl, and many other things are tied in the holy thread that thread is then tied to the bride by a priest in right hand and one in the left leg as well, then the chuda is tied to the bride, chuda is a set of bangles which is tied by the maternal uncle and aunt( mama and mami), then the Haldi ceremony gets started. and for the groom’s side, the priest comes just before the departure of Barat to tie the gaana and sehra.
